Founded by Simon Callaghan, Callaghan Stoneworks specialises in traditional and heritage stonework, lime finishes, and conservation for historic and character buildings.

About Simon, in his own words:

“I started working with stone at the age of 16, as an apprentice stonemason. From the very beginning, I was drawn to traditional materials and methods, and to the idea of building and repairing things properly, with care and attention to detail.

After my apprenticeship, I spent two years training in the restoration of historic buildings in Estella, Spain, where I studied traditional construction techniques and conservation principles. That period was fundamental in shaping the way I work today and in developing a strong respect for historic buildings and natural materials.

Heritage stonemasonry work across Shropshire including historic houses, churches and listed buildings

Over the last 27 years, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, including both new stone construction and the repair and restoration of historic and traditional buildings. This experience has been gained across different companies and contexts, always with a focus on long-term performance rather than short-term fixes.

Although I was born in Shrewsbury, I grew up in Spain and spent most of my life there, so my accent sometimes surprises people. I mention it simply to avoid surprises — my background is international, but my approach is always clear and straightforward.

Since returning to the UK around four years ago, I’ve been working with local companies and private clients, carrying out stone masonry, heritage repairs, and lime-based work. Alongside my practical experience, I have also completed the NVQ Level 3 in Heritage Masonry, a UK-recognised qualification focused on traditional building conservation and best practice.

Callaghan Stoneworks takes a hands-on approach from the first conversation to project completion. Clients deal directly with me, and every job is approached with care for the building, its materials, and its long-term condition. Whatever the project, my goal is always the same: to deliver honest, well-considered work that respects the building and stands the test of time.”
